Here’s everything we know about the upcoming prequel to Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves. Army of Thieves is the second part of Zack Snyder’s Netflix zombie franchise, eventually complemented by an animated series named Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.
Directed by Matthias Schweighofer.
Army of Thieves follows Ludwig Deiter, a single character from the original Netflix film from 2021, during the outbreak’s early stages. With its opening sequence, Army of the Dead establishes the zombie infection context. A military vehicle transporting weird, unidentified, extraterrestrial cargo collides with a car driven by a distracted newlywed couple outside Nevada’s Area 51. A hyper-athletic zombie (dubbed Zeus later) appears and kills several troops while infecting others.
As seen during Army of the Dead’s musical montage, these zombie dwellers then descend upon Las Vegas and attack, setting up the inciting incident for Snyder’s story.
A business mogul named Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) prepares a $200 million robbery at The Olympus casino four days before the US government threatens to destroy Las Vegas with a nuclear strike.
Almost every main character in Army of the Dead is killed off by the end credits, although the fate of a few others is unknown. A direct sequel is in the works, with one or more original human characters probably spearheading a zombie revolution. But, before then, here’s what to anticipate from Army of Thieves, the upcoming prequel film.
During the socially distant festivities of SDCC 2021, the first trailer for Army of Thieves was released, showcasing a considerably lighter, funnier tone than Army of the Dead and a significant divergence from Snyder’s visual style.
The prequel will have some globe-trotting action, but the primary focus will be on the dynamic between Ludwig and his fellow criminals.
The only mention of zombies in the Army of Thieves trailer is in a news article about a zombie epidemic in Las Vegas, but there’s no hint that Ludwig’s gang would visit the city.
Whereas American themes heavily influenced Army of the Dead, Army of Thieves investigates Zeus’ deadly Vegas vacation from a European perspective. The fans were thrilled to see the trailer and are waiting for the release of the film.
The release date for the Army of Thieves has been set.
The Army of the Dead by Zack Snyder was only released three months ago, but a prequel, Army of Thieves, is already in the works.
Snyder announced the news on Twitter, along with a photo of Ludwig Dieter fiddling with a safe. Army of Thieves will be available to stream worldwide starting Friday, October 29.
Netflix has planned two Army of the Dead spin-offs based on their faith in the original film, the first of which is Army of Thieves, which will be released in 2022 before the animated prequel Lost Vegas.

Is Army of Thieves a sequel to Army of the Dead?
Army of Thieves is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s zombie blockbuster, set several years before the events of that film, in the early days of America’s struggle against the undead.
According to Snyder, an army of Thieves will have “more safes and fewer zombies,” who promises “more safes and less zombies” in the sequel to Army of the Dead.
Matthias Schweighofer played the lead and directed the picture written by Snyder and his Army of the Dead co-writer Shay Hatten.
“I was ecstatic since it tells Ludwig Dieter’s story before the Army of the Dead movie,” Schweighofer told RadioTimes.com and other media. “So it’ll be a big heist movie with big heist stuff you’ve never seen before.”
He went on to say: “It’s a massive box office hit that’s also a lot of fun. That’s all I have to say about it. And it’ll be interesting to see how it ties into Zack’s zombie world, but we’re all extremely thrilled, and this is just the beginning of a huge universe.”
Apart from Schweighofer, no other Army of the Dead stars are likely to feature in Army of Thieves, but a surprise post-credits sting isn’t out of the question.
