Maggie Gyllenhaal’s feature directorial debut “The Lost Daughter,” adapted on the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name, will be released in theatres and on Netflix in December.
The film will have its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it will compete with films like Pablo Larrain’s “Spencer,” Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” and Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Hand of God,” all of which are Netflix originals.
When did THE LOST DAUGHTER make its debut?
Ferrante first mentioned The Lost Daughter in her Guardian column in 2018. Ferrante wrote an open letter to Gyllenhaal in it, granting her artistic liberty to do whatever she wants with her story, regardless of how much she wishes she stayed true to the source material.
“It’s critical for me, for her, for all women that her job be hers and turn out well,” Ferrante said. “I already have mine, replete with all of its advantages and disadvantages.” Women have been seeking the means and opportunity to give their form to what they have learned from the enormous warehouse of the arts, established up primarily by males, for a very short time.
This isn’t the first time a Ferrante novel has been made into a film. HBO agreed to adopt the four novels in the author’s best-selling trilogy in 2018. Two seasons of My Brilliant Friend have been broadcast, and the next two are in the works. Each season contains eight episodes that tell the story of one of the series’ novels.
When will it be available on Netflix?
The film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2021 before hitting select theatres on December 17th, presumably qualifying it for the awards season.

The film will be available on Netflix worldwide on December 31st, 2021, during the holiday season.
What is the current state of production?
According to Deadline, production on The Lost Daughter was concluded in 2020, with filming in Greece. Post-production is finished now that the film is set for its festival premiere.

Originally scheduled to shoot in New Jersey, the epidemic forced Gyllenhaal to relocate the film’s scenario and filming site to Greece. “I have never felt more alive and in the stream of my life than I felt as a filmmaker,” Gyllenhaal said of her first feature picture as a director.
“I think there is such a thing as women’s filmmaking, and I’m compelled by what that means,” Gyllenhaal said of her directorial debut. “And I don’t reckon we’ve got the opportunity to truly investment gate what that means.”
