Enola Holmes 2, the riotous younger sister of Sherlock Holmes, has been announced by Netflix after the first film was a huge blockbuster for the streaming giant in 2020.
Millie Bobby Brown will reprise her role as Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister, and Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes. Enola Holmes 2 will also see the return of writer Jack Thorne and director Harry Bradbeer.
With 76 million views in its first 28 days, Enola Holmes is among the top 10 most-watched Netflix movies of all time, so it’s no surprise we’re getting a sequel! The Enola Holmes 2 has only recently been revealed, so there are few details to go on, but with six books to draw inspiration from and a waiting audience, it’s safe to say that the game is on.
With writer Jack Thorne and director Harry Bradbeer at the helm, Enola Holmes 2 will return to the well of Nancy Springer’s novel series. We may expect to see more known people on-screen, but Netflix has been tight-lipped about the specifics so far.
What is the setup for Enola Holmes 2?
If you’re looking for a recap of how the mystery of the missing lord is handled in the film, we’ve got you covered. However, we’re more interested in Enola Holmes’ final minutes, which feature a Holmes family reunion and Enola laying out her plans for after the film’s events.
Enola starts her hunt for her mother after saving the lord. She eventually receives a coded message in the newspaper, supposedly from her mother, telling her to meet her at the Royal Academy that night.
Enola suspects Sherlock (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft (Sam Claflin) are con artists, so she disguises herself as a newspaper salesperson to validate her suspicions. They leave sad, but Sherlock notices Enola’s childhood toy (a pine cone she named Dash), indicating that she was present. Enola had an unexpected reunion with her mother in her room, who apologises for abandoning her. Still, Eudora realised it wasn’t “safe” to inform Enola where she was going because she is a Suffragist.
She assures Enola that she will always be there for her if she needs her and that all Enola has to do now is leave her a coded message in the newspaper. Enola says in a concluding monologue to the camera that she, like the rest of her family, needs to follow her “own path”: “I now know that being alone doesn’t mean I have to be lonely.” That was something Mother never wanted. Instead, she wished for me to find my independence, my future, and my calling.
“I’m a detective, a codebreaker, and a finder of lost souls,” says the character. It is absolutely up to me to live my life. And it is up to us to determine how the future will be shaped.” Enola has arrived in town, and she’ll very certainly be taking some of Sherlock’s cases. Even though the tale is drastically different, the movie leaves Enola in a similar position to the end of the first novel, The Case of the Missing Marquess.
Trailer for Enola Holmes
While Enola Holmes 2 has been confirmed, no production dates have been set, so that we won’t see anything from the sequel for a while.
When will Enola Holmes be released?
While Netflix has now confirmed a sequel, we still don’t have a release date for Enola Holmes 2. However, given Brown’s commitment to Stranger Things, it’s unlikely that the sequel was shot in secret, so production wouldn’t begin until later in 2021, putting the release date for Enola Holmes 2 on Netflix in 2022. For now, a September 2022 release date seems like a good bet to keep the same release date as the first film.
Enola Holmes’s creator
Harry Bradbeer, who directed the multi-award-winning Fleabag (which, like Enola Holmes, regularly shattered the fourth wall), will return to film the sequel. Bradbeer is also now working on a first-look arrangement with Amazon.
Similarly, Jack Thorne returns to adapt the script for the sequel from Nancy Springer’s novels. For the sequel, Thorne is again named as an executive producer. Producers include Micahel Dreyer, Ali Mendes, Paige Brown, Alex Garcia, Joshua Grode, and Mary Parent.
The Production of Enola Holmes
Enola Holmes 2 production has yet to begin as of August 2021. However, it is slated for later in 2021, as we’ll discuss in a moment. As you may know, Millie Bobby Brown is now filming Season 4 of Stranger Things, which will last until August or September 2021.
The sequel will begin filming in September 2021, according to our sources. According to new reports from The Knowledge and Hull Live, filming on the sequel will begin in the first week of October outside of a production facility on Hull’s high street.
According to The Knowledge, “Enola Holmes 2 is being produced at a huge south-east studio,” which is thought to be Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom. The high street in Hull, UK, will be “transformed into Victorian London” on October 5th and 6th, according to Hull Live. “The production company has also mentioned that they are hiring for extras to appear as passers-by dressed in Victorian garb to participate in the film and will be putting up ads for recruitment soon,” they add.
Filming on the sequel is also said to be taking place in London, exactly as it was for the original film.
The Cast of Enola Holmes
Millie Bobby Brown will, of course, reprise her role as Enola Holmes, whom she “fell in love with” while filming the previous film, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I’ve always said I liked playing Eleven because I didn’t simply do one thing with her and then stop.” So I love that I can keep playing her and with the Enola book series… I’m excited about the future. “She was ecstatic.
Henry Cavill has announced that he will reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes, but there has been no word on whether Sam Claflin will reprise him as Mycroft Holmes. However, it appears that if they were to, they would have little trouble getting Claflin back. He told Digital Spy, “I had so much fun with this job.” “It was something I wasn’t anticipating at all… yet I was completely enthralled by it and the people involved. The character smote me.”
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Louis Partridge reprise his role as Tewkesbury, but it’s also possible that he won’t appear in the sequel. Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes and Adeel Akhtar as Lestrade are more likely to return. And Akhtar would gladly reprise his part as Lestrade if the opportunity arose.
“Harry [Bradbeer] is such a laid-back, kind director. I’m a little lower on the cast list than the others, but he still took the time to explain everything about Lestrade and how he operates. “He revealed this to Digital Spy. “Millie’s return as this character would also be amazing, merely to be in that situation and feel it all over again. I’d be ecstatic to do so.”
The first film ended with the Holmes family (kind of) reuniting and Enola staring into the camera, declaring that she must forge her own path going ahead.
In an interview with Decider, Bradbeer claimed there’s still a lot of difficulties in this dysfunctional family, adding, “If we go back, there are still a lot of problems in this dysfunctional family.” Not only in the ruined country, but also in the broken family.”
It is unknown what mystery will be solved in the sequel. However, there are numerous stories in the series that can be adapted. Therefore, according to the logical order, the following film will be about Enola’s search for Lady Cecily Allistair in The Case of the Left-Handed Lady.
We’d love to see them adapt The Case of the Left-Handed Lady, which follows Enola as she searches for Sherlock’s sidekick, Dr John Watson.
