June’s story is far from over after a shocking ending in the fourth season finale and with so much more to tell (Elizabeth Moss). Whether she made it to Canada or not, the fallout from her decisions in Gilead will undoubtedly continue in the upcoming episodes. Meanwhile, one major character’s journey in the show has now concluded, but many are still left hanging at the season 4 finale.

What will be the next step? Will season 5 pick up where the previous season left off? That is an unequivocal yes! Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale will continue to follow Margaret Atwood’s follow-up novel.

Release Date of the Handmaids Tale season 5

Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale does not yet have a release date, as there has been no official announcement. Filming for the upcoming season is still in progress. The show’s creator, Bruce Miller, stated in June 2021, “We’re just starting to kind of gather our wool and gather our writers and gather up people to pull them back together.”

That would imply that filming will take a long time to complete, even though the show was renewed by Hulu in December. Season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale is expected to premiere in mid-2022, or possibly sooner, depending on the production process. So keep your fingers crossed!

One character who will not be returning is Fred Waterford, played by Joseph Fiennes, who was executed by June and many of her fellow fugitive handmaids at the end of season 4.

McKenna Grace’s personality Esther Keyes was a notable expansion to the cast in season 4, which had mostly continued to be the same since the show’s beginning. Similarly, a new regular face joined the ranks of the Aunts this season: Jeananne Goossen as Aunt Ruth.

It remains to be seen whether these new characters will return in the following season. Unfortunately, in terms of new characters we might see in the future, the original novel doesn’t provide many hints, as the show has been on its current path since season 2. Nonetheless, because the series is setting up the events of the sequel novel, The Testaments, we may see some more Mayday faces.

What’s the plot for The Handmaid’s Tale season 5?

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Miller described the upcoming season as “Sophie’s Choice: The Series,” in that you’re moving on with someone who’s made these terrible choices.

I believe there are a couple of things to consider moving forward. First, it’s the American story. Can we return to normalcy, or do we have to move on to something new? “And that is where June is at the moment. She’s done something terrible, or she believes she’s done something irreversible.

Littlefield stated that the show is currently “laying the groundwork for The Testaments,” a 2019 sequel to the original novel on which the show is based, which MGM Television and Hulu have already developed the privileges for a TV transformation.

June holds baby Nicole in the final moments of the Season 4 finale while still covered in blood after leading Commander Waterford’s participation. When Luke walks in, she asks for a few minutes with her daughter before leaving. June may have to go underground to hide after this heinous act of vengeance, which is how we find her more than a decade later in The Testament.

We saw June realize throughout season 4 that Moira and Luke have been Nicole’s parents far more than she has, so it might make sense for them to appear as her parents in the spin-off exhibit as nicely.

The other central character in The Testaments, Aunt Lydia, has been a covert double agent since Gilead’s inception. In her old age, she manages to reunite the two sisters in a mission that will bring Gilead to its ultimate demise.

Serena Joy is one character in The Testaments who does not have an ending. She is now pregnant and alone in confinement in Canada, with her husband deceased. Because the ICC did not exonerate Fred for his crimes, it is unlikely that she will be released anytime soon.

We have previously seen protestors in her favour and calling for her freedom, but now that she is writing again, she may be able to rally the media to call for her release. Is there a romance in the works with Trello as well?

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait until the new season begins filming to learn more about the plot of The Handmaid’s Tale season 5.

How many seasons will there be?

Warren Littlefield, the series producer, also confirmed to Bustle that Miller isn’t teasing when he says he doesn’t know: “I can tell you, if you had Bruce Miller under Sodium Pentothal, you’d get ‘I don’t know,’ because we don’t.” Although he confirmed, “We’re getting closer to the end, but we don’t know yet.” On the other hand, Miller stated that he would continue the series as long as Moss remained on board.

“I’ll keep going as long as Lizzie will do it with me,” Miller told Deadline. “This story has a lot of life in it. I’m certainly intrigued by what happens in The Testaments, and whether or not that will be a part of our future that’s a bigger question.” This story, then, appears to have a long way to go.

Is Season 5 the final season?

Bruce Miller, the creator of The Handmaid’s Tale, said at the end of Season 5: “I’m not going to overstay my welcome.”

The Handmaid’s Tale creator, Bruce Miller, is unsure whether the upcoming fifth season of the hit Hulu drama will be it’s final, but the pandemic has helped put things in perspective for him.

“I’m never looking to end it,” he said in an interview for Deadline’s Contenders TV virtual event on August 14-15. “I work with a complex group of people; we have a lovely group of writers, a spectacular group of actors and visiting directors, and our crew. They did a fantastic job this year. During Covid, they created the entire show. We shot the entire thing over two weeks.

We wrote each script to change the story and perform it with different actors, but they created it themselves. So Liz was up there with executive producer Elisabeth Moss with all that experience when I was here in Los Angeles.” His remarks come after Hulu’s newly appointed head of scripted originals Jordan Helman told Deadline that the creative team behind the dystopian drama was debating whether to end the show with season five, which is currently in the works or continue.

Keep an eye on the Deadline.

Miller went on to say, “The team created an incredible TV show.” So I’m not so quick to say, ‘Oh, let’s just walk away.’ I’m not sure how you felt about the pandemic, but I certainly learned some things in my life that are pretty uncommon, and working with these people is one of them. So, honestly, I know what the end is, and I’m not going to overstay my welcome, but I’m also not going to rush off if I don’t have to because, you know, as long as I’m writing for Elisabeth Moss, it’s much better.”
