There have been many shows that capture the essence of comedy. But there are only a few that emphasize dark humor and make it a norm. It is tough to achieve dark on-screen humor, realizing that the content would come off as highly offensive to many viewers. But there is one show that perfects the content to make everything look perfect. And it is none other than The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
As of now, the show has gone for three long seasons! However, it has been renewed to come back for a fourth season as well. Although there have been no release dates confirmed yet, we can still be sure of the coming season to release in a time frame within this year or the following year. It is finally coming to terms as Midge gets accustomed to her new life of not being pampered all the time and making her name across the United States as the everlasting comedian. With the partnership of her and her adamant agent, Susie Myerson, they have been dazzling the audience. Let us see what the next season has in store for its fans!
The evolution of Midge Maisel
When Midge started in the first season, she was a different woman from that of the conventional stand-up comedian she comfortably is now. When the show first started, it showed how Her family very much pampered midge. Even when she was living with Joel, she felt that the kind of patriarchy she was living in didn’t make her feel independent enough.
But after one night, she got super drunk and created a fiasco at a bar by delivering some of the best on-stage jokes. It wasn’t until Susie was working in that bar and discovered the talent. Soon enough, she started making money off of the entire act. Even today, in the latest seasons, Midge is very blunt about her views regarding answering back to her family about the kind of person she is.
Usually, her parents insist on living the high rich-alum life that any rising New Yorker would aspire to live. After all, Midge’s dad is a hardworking maths teacher who has made a great name amongst his peers. But Midge wants to break all these conventions, or so we think. She is happy with what she has been up to! In the latest season, she travels around the country opening for the musical star Shy Baldwin.
The comedy-packed cast!
The most memorable factor about any show is the cast and crew. Now, of course, the model is coming back for some more drama. Rachel Brosnahan is going to be playing the titular character. She is once again going to take on the role of the rising stand-up comedian! She is going to bring more fire with the coming season.
Other than Rachel, we also have her partner in crime, Alex Borstein, who plays the agent, Susie Myerson. Susie has been looking forward to Maisel’s success and is responsible for monetizing her efforts. So we can say that they are the duo and probably the two heroes that save the day.
We can’t forget Midge’s loving parents, Abraham “Abe Weissman and Rose Weissman. The talented Tony Shalhoub is portraying Abe. After he retired from teaching as a mathematics professor at Columbia University, he now wants to move on to bigger things. He is currently working at Bell Labs, taking career risks of his own. Marin Hinkle comes back as Rose Weissman, the stubborn mother. We also have Michael Zegen coming back as Joel Maisel, the loving ex-husband of Midge and the father of their children.
Jane Lynch also reprises her role as the famous Sophie Lennon, the celebrity comedian living her royal life. Luke Kirby also comes back as Lenny Bruce, the dashing comedian and friendly companion of Midge Maisel. Zachary Levi also returns as Dr. Benjamin Ettenberg, a successful doctor who meets Midge in the Catskills and starts dating her.
The growing friendship between Midge Maisel and Susie Myerson
One of the main reasons that these two create bonds so much is because well opposites attract. While Midge comes in from a pretty affluent and educated background, Susie is the exact opposite. Susie may not be educated enough about the upper class but is the street-smart meanie that we all love. Well, Susie might act tough on the outside, but on the inside, she is definitely as soft-hearted as Maisel.
Even for the two of them, it is more than just earning money. Now, they consider each other a family. Wherever Midge goes, Susie is right by her side.
A comedian-to-comedian rivalry between Midge Maisel and Sophie Lennon? (!)
Of all the people that brought spice to the show, we can never forget the wealthy and double-sided comedian, Sophie Lennon. While Sophie Lennon lives the rich and royal life of a celebrity like no other, she portrays herself as adaptable to anything. Well, she is not.
She is an arrogant lady who cannot keep a check on her actions. Recently, in the third season, Sophie wanted to venture the idea of becoming an actress and transitioning her life from what she already is, i.e., a successful stand-up comedian. While she was rehearsing for her play, many of her co-workers found Sophie very stubborn and off-putting.
When she decided to take Susie as her agent, Susie had to juggle her time between Midge and Sophie. And it happens to be that Midge and Sophie have a standing rivalry. Mainly, Sophie sees Midge as a rival comedian and does not want her to move forward in this new life of hers.
When it came time for Sophie to perform her Broadway play, she blew the chance of being a real actor because she had stage fright. Instead, she completed a stand-up comedy act for her fans and let everything go to waste. Susie told her that she could never become a great actress because she just blew her last and final chance. Susie then walked away from Sophie Lennon, leaving her alone to contemplate. Put that on your plate!
With all this news in mind, we can say that the fourth season is still in development. The series has been renewed. There has been no official date announcement made. But we can only wait and see to hear some word from the creators and cast. Until then, it’s time to watch the three marvelous seasons of the show if you haven’t already. Enjoy Midge Maisel and her rising dark humor performance
