Explained is a documentary TV series on Netflix. It premiered on May 23, 2018. The series has two seasons as of now, and there is no real news about Season 3. The fans are eagerly waiting for any hint about the renewal of Season 3.
The show was produced by Vox Media in partnership with Netflix and released episodes every week. Explained is created by Esra Klein, co-founder of Vox media, along with Joe Posner. The show has seen several Executive Producers such as Ezra Klein, Kara Rozansky, Claire Gordon, Chad Mumm, Lisa Nishimura, Joe Posner, Jason Spingnam-Koff, and Kate Townsend.
Season 1 of Explained
Each episode of Explained averaged between 16 to 24 minutes. The episodes were voiced by several different guest narrators on several different topics. Explained has covered topics ranging from Music, video games to Sexual aspects, Astrology, space, and aliens.
There are 30 episodes in the first two seasons of Explained—20 in Season 1 and 10 in Season 2.
The first episode of Season 1, “The racial wealth gap”, talked about the wealth gap between the US races and its causes, including slavery and segregation. Samira Wily narrated the episode. The second episode, “Designer DNA”, talks about gene editing and the risks, benefits, and possible consequences. Joss Fong narrated the episode.
Also, Episode 3 goes through the concept of Monogamy with historical and biological perspectives. Then, it takes a look at modern couples and compares them to the habits of other species. Maria Bello narrates this episode.
Moreover, Episode 4, narrated by Estelle Caswell, talks about the growing global popularity of K-pop. Then, narrated by Christian Slater, while 5 goes through the growth and popularity of Cryptocurrency and the value it might have in the future.
Maria Bello also narrated episode 6, which talks about diet culture and how many diet routines fail in the long run. Estelle Caswell narrated episode 8 talking about eSports, the rise of Video games, and Episode 9 talking about Extraterrestrial life or Aliens. The episode goes through the Possible existence of life outside earth, theories and UFOs, and other things.
The tenth episode talks about the history of punctuation marks and especially the exclamation mark. The changing use of punctuations and Exclamation marks is explained in this episode. Episode 11 talks about the sport of Cricket and its rising significance all over the world.
Episode 12 goes through the history of cannabis and other aspects. It talks about how there other byproducts of cannabis and their growing trend. Episode 13 talks about the history and culture around tattoos. The following episode discusses the history and accuracy of astrology and the scientific approach to it—the theory behind why people believe in astrology worldwide.
Moreover, Episode 15 talks about increasing the human life expectancy and the study of aging. The episode is titled “Can We Live Forever?” And talks about the possibilities of increasing human life. Episode 16 talks about the very less talked female orgasm and the modern approach of women towards orgasm. Episode 17 titled “Political correctness” Discusses the influence of politics on various aspects, with Episode 18 talking about the gender pay gap. Episode 19 examines the water crises in the world and episode 20 discusses the history of music.
Season 2 talk about Cults, Billionaires, Animal Intelligence, Coding, Pirates, Athleisure, Pandemics and their spread, Vegan Culture, and plant-based meat and beauty and diamonds. The episodes are narrated by various known people such as Lakeith Stanfield, Maggie Siff, Hilary Swank, Aya Cash, etc. Season 2 gained as much positive response as Season 1.
Explained also gave birth to give of its spin-off series. The Mind, Explained a five-episode miniseries are discussing the subjects relating to the human brain. It released on September 12, 2019, on Netflix. Sex, Explained, which explained sex in its episodes released on January 4, 2020.
Focusing on the Covid -19 pandemic Coronavirus, Explained was released on April 26, 2020. He goes through the development and the spread of the coronavirus disease worldwide and talks about the efforts and measures taken to stop the spread. Considering the elections in the United States of America, Who’s Vote Counts, Explained was released on September 28, 2020. It talks about how the elections and voting system works in the Presidential Elections of the United States of America.
A five-episode miniseries called Money explained Financial scams, credit cards, student loans, retirement, and gambling, released on May 11, 2021. Along with Explained, these Spin-off miniseries have covered great topics. As a result, they have attracted a significant number of viewers and have received positive reviews.
They are dedicating at least 3-5 episodes each for one single topic, going in-depth. These limited series are narrated by prominent people such as Emma Stone, J. K. Simmons, Idris Elba, Leonardo DiCaprio, Selena Gomez, John Legend, Jane Lynch, Tiffany Haddish, Edie Falco, Marcia Gay Hardon other actors and artists.
Season 3 of Explained
Explained has been praised by many critiques about the approach it uses to explain various important topics. However, they are easy to understand. The episodes use a linear format of storytelling. The explanation is put out in a way the viewers can understand with their convenience.
There has been no official announcement of the renewal of Explained for Season 3, but we expect one. Explained has been one of the most widely popular documentary TV series, and there are more things the viewers want to be explained.
There are many speculations as to what topics Explained is going to explain in Season 3. The first two seasons have covered many important and debatable topics. Topics such as Racial and gender discrimination, conspiracy theories about space and other things, the History and the future of many things that are in use today.
The viewers expect more topics for Explained to cover, such as Climate change and Global warming, more about space; we know Explained talked about Aliens in Season 1. But exploring space becomes more critical if climate change affects the earth worse than we expected, and humans will need a new home. History of space and how someone thought they wanted to fly out in the sky and find out what is out there—topics such as far future and the change and development in the lifestyle of the human species.
Season 2 came out on October 3, 2019, and gave ten episodes explaining several essential topics. The range of subjects covered in Season 2 increased the viewers’ expectations for Season 3. Netflix or Vox media have not yet announced or even hinted towards a potential third season. But we can not rule the possibility that there will be one. There are so many aspects out there for Explained to explain; we can expect the third season; we just have to wait.
