The Escape from Gilead

After the shocking finale of the third season, June’s attempt to escape Gilead has been successful in which she saved the lives of 86 children and some other handmaids and house workers who were prisoners to the mental and physical torture of the authoritarian Gilead. Although, in light of the recent events, a lot of fortune has come into June’s life. Her escape was not an easy one. A lot of things did not go as planned, according to June. But now, the 4th season progressed very rapidly as several events took place in an instant. In such a short time, June’s liberation was only the inception of the season. Along with that, there would be surprises for what the Canadian government decides to do with Serena Joy.

A standing, stone-cold rivalry between June Osborne and Serena Joy Waterford

After the finale of the 4th season, it becomes clear that there is now a dominating rivalry between the female leads of the show, June Osborne (Elizabeth Moss) and Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski). As Fred’s character (Joseph Fiennes), with the help of Commander Nick Blaine (Max Minghella), falls out of the frame in the show’s finale, there can only be the assumption that he won’t make a return. A great contribution was also made by Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford).

As it was before in the previous seasons, the authoritarian rule of Gilead was dominated by a patriarchal society. But now, the tables have turned as June has returned to Canada, back to her husband and her friends, still feeling vengeful. She now leads the fight against Serena and her case in the International Criminal Court. As Serena is now pregnant with her husband’s baby, June will only try to seek revenge for what Serena did to her as her handmaid.

Confirmed for Season 5!

The creators have confirmed that the show is coming back for another season. Although, fans have been speculating as to what could happen next after the finale of Season 4. When June participated in the killing of Fred as revenge, she might now face imprisonment for her crime.

Many other characters have their story arcs as well, which are being played in the background. For example, Janine is now back in Gilead after she captured after the aerial bombardment ordered by a joint decision of all the Commanders. But now, will Janine try to break free of the shackles along with Mrs Keyes? This is something that can only be answered in the next season.

Another pivotal character in the frame is none other than the diabolical and two-faced Aunt Lydia. She has now been seeking revenge as well for June’s attempts of destroying Gilead. As of now, she’s now treated with disrespect by many Commanders, as June was the one who initiated the escape plan right under Aunt Lydia’s nose.

The Search for Hannah and the Collapse of Gilead?

One of the main plot twists that remain unanswered is that is June is still going to go on the hunt to save her daughter, Hannah, who is still residing in Gilead. Even though she has tried multiple times to run after her daughter with the help of Commander Blaine and Commander Waterford, she has still been unsuccessful. The reason is due to the high surveillance and protection that has been made around all Gilead areas. But as adamant and hell-bent June and Luke are as parents, it looks like that they are not going to stop looking for their precious daughter. At least, that is what the fans are hoping for!

Another big question is that will the next season get to see the collapse of Gilead. Now that June has returned to Canada with a lot of valuable information, she might help the government bring down Gilead and its authoritative rule. June is still not done seeking revenge for everything that has happened.

At the end of the 4th season, it was shown that Commander Fred was beaten badly by many of the girls. Now, no one knows whether he is dead or not. For all the fans know, there might be a sudden plot twist that shows that he might now be a prisoner of the United States government.
