One of the most memorable wedding dresses in modern history is probably that of Angelina Jolie, who said ‘I do’ to her (then) dream man, Brad Pitt, dressed in a Versace silk gown adorned with hand-made drawings created by her six children. Of course, ‘artist’ wasn’t the only role filled by Madox (then aged 13), Pax (10), Zahara (nine), Vivienne (six), Shiloh (eight) and Knox (six). Rather, each child played a very specific role in line with their talents. Zahara and Vivienne, for instance, were flower girls; Shiloh and Knox bore the rings; and Pax, the culinary wizard, baked the wedding cake. For many, this occasion was the ultimate exponent of an authentic family wedding: one which, in Jolie’s own words, was not an occasion for two, but one in which “all eight of us got married.” What other celebrities let their children play a role in making their big day more memorable than ever?
Children have traditional roles in weddings, one of the cutest of which is that of a mini bridesmaid. Jessica Simpson’s daughter, Maxwell Drew Johnson, performed this role to perfection twice – first in her mom’s wedding and, two months down the line, at her aunt Jessica Simpson’s big day. The little star wore a dress fashioned on her aunt’s wedding gown, in stark white, bearing cute touches such as frills along the neckline, and a feather-effect skirt that took its inspiration from the world of ballet. Fashion is certainly one area in which celebrity kids are breaking with tradition. Up until very recently, flower girls and junior bridesmaids wore conservative, puff-sleeved dresses with high collars. These days, both female and male children are sporting outfits which are more in line with the times, with hairdos, dresses and shoes often bearing natural ‘flower child’ influences.
Dazzling Best Men
Celebrity kids make great best ‘men’, despite their tiny stature. Comic actor Kevin Hart showed the extent to which his son Hendrix, aged eight, is his best friend, by asking him to serve as best man when he tied the knot with his beautiful wife, Eniko. Hart’s teenage daughter Heaven, meanwhile, served as a bridesmaid, wearing a knee-length white dress inspired by the bride’s.
Sometimes, celebrity children are too young to walk down the aisle or bear jewellery. However, celebrity brides are finding ways to get around this by including their children in their wedding fashion and festivities. Take the case of top fashion influencer, Chiara Ferragni, who wed her true love, rapper Fedez, in a traditional Dior gown, but wore a different dress for the reception – one that bore hand-painted lyrics from her husband’s works, as well as beautiful illustrations of imagery that reminded her of her son – including one of a lion, in homage to her son’s name (Leone). Her son also made an appearance for beautiful spreads featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other leading fashion magazines.
Children can play a bevy of roles at weddings, with some of the most traditional being those of flower child and ring bearer. Celebrities have shown more creative ways to feature their children – as is the case of Kevin Hart, whose son served as best man. Famous actors and entertainers are also finding ways to make even the youngest of children form part of their special day, by utilizing their art or simply creating new art inspired by their loved ones.
