Written by DuVall and Mary Holland, the film has been in planning for a long. In 2018, the film’s distribution rights were acquired, and DuVall was announced to direct it. The director was quick to sort out her primary cast. But the rest of the roles required a much longer time to scrutinize.
There wasn’t much news about the film’s production. And it was expected that Happiest Season was going to be yet another casualty of the pandemic. However, it was later announced that the film was able to complete its filming just before the pandemic.
The entire filming was wrapped up in just a month. It was swift work by the crew, and the film is set for its release later this year. Initially, the film planned to hit the theatres on November 20, 2020. However, a slight reshuffling in the schedule by Sony forced the movie in shifting the date to November 25, 2020.

The film made it’s intent clear by the cast it had chosen. Kristen Stewart was the first star to sign the project as far back as in 2018. The following year saw Mackenzie Davis joining the film, to round off a powerful pairing.
The pair is going to share the screen with Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, and Alison Brie. Other members of the cast also include Aubrey Plaza, Dan Levy, and Ana Gasteyer in key roles.
