Benedict Cumberbatch portrays the lead role of Sherlock Holmes while Martin Freeman portrays Sherlock’s friend and partner, Dr John Watson. The series follows Sherlock as he uses his exceptional intelligence and powers of observation to solve cases. The series also has a recurring feature, Sherlock’s conflict with his nemesis Jim Moriarty. Series creator, Mark Gatiss portrays Sherlock’s brother Mycroft. Louis Brealy portrays pathologist Molly Hooper who occasionally assists Sherlock in his cases.
Critics gave positive reviews for Sherlock. Particular praise was directed at Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for their performances. Cumberbatch won Outstanding Lead Actor, and Freeman won Outstanding Supporting Actor at the Emmys in 2014 for their performances. The show itself won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series.

The finale of the fourth season released in January 2017. It has been three years since then, and fans of the series eagerly await the fifth season.
Ever since the last episode released in 2014, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have been busy portraying their characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They were also cast in other films and television shows which also kept them busy.
The plot of season five
The fourth season ended on a cliffhanger which paves a clear way for the imminent fifth season. All the mysteries were revealed, but Holmes and Watson were still in search of the unknown individual. The case will definitely continue in the next season along with various other story arcs that need to be addressed and completed.
In the last season, Sherlock met his sister, Eurus Holmes. This surprised Sherlock, as he did not remember having a sister. This will hopefully be addressed in the fifth season. It the fourth season finale, it was also revealed that Eurus is an expert in manipulating her brother. She also derives a lot of thrill and fun in manipulating her brother, so this may bring about an interesting turn in the next season.
The latest Netflix film, Enola Holmes, followed Sherlock’s younger sister, Enola. This film has generated greater interest in Sherlock’s family.
The show’s creators had also revealed that they wanted to an episode on the Red-Headed League, a group who rob a bank with Jim Moriarty and Sherlock later investigating the case.
Progress on season five
The makers of the show and BBC are yet to renew the series for a fifth season. The renewal, once done, will allow the makers to begin production on the fifth season.
Among the cast members, the show’s lead, Benedict Cumberbatch might be unavailable for shooting the fifth season. Cumberbatch is currently busy shooting Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, the sequel to 2016’s Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, Mark Gatiss, Louise Brealey, Andrew Scott and Amanda Abbington will return to reprise their roles for the fifth season.
When will season five release?
The fifth season of Sherlock doesn’t have a release date yet. If production begins soon, the fifth season could release in late 2021 or early 2022.
Fans who have enjoyed the fourth season will enjoy the fifth season for sure as the makers will be working hard on it. New cases and new foes will be witnessed in the next season, which will definitely be worth the wait.
