Top Gun: Maverick was scheduled to be out by now, ending the long anticipation for viewers of more than 30 years.
However, the global pandemic led to yet another delay for the sequel. Now Tom Cruise’s Maverick will be requesting a second flyby year – as long as there is no other delay.
Tom Cruise will be expecting that nobody has lost their need for speed in the extended wait as Maverick returns. To pass his wisdom onto a new edition of Top Gun recruits before they head on a specialised mission that has never been seen before.
It seems like everyone is going to have to strap in for a high-intensity thrill ride. But what else can anyone expect from Top Gun: Maverick.
Top Gun 2 Air Date
The sequel was actually set for release on July 12, 2019, before it was hit with a postponement of an entire year. Things were looking better though after that date was pushed forward to June 24, 2020, in the US and July 17, 2020, in the UK.
However, the sequel was then encountered with another delay to December 23, 2020. That wasn’t the finish line of it, as Paramount has now extended the sequel back to July 2, 2021.
Tom Cruise responded to the initial delay with a response to viewers: “I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone.”
But why did it take this long for a sequel to be made in the first place? Cruise explained that it was all because he doesn’t “make movies just to make movies”.
Filming on the sequel happened from May 2018 to June 2019.
Top Gun 2 Trailer Release
The first teaser released at Comic-Con International on July 18, 2019. Maverick surely still has the need for speed.
When the trailer released, viewers were quick to find similarities. Between the trailer for Top Gun 2 and the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, finding specific shots that appeared almost the same to Episode VII‘s trailer.
The second trailer aired on December 16, 2019, as an early festive treat for Top Gun fans.
Top Gun 2 Cast
It’s been around 30 years since the face-off of the best of the best. Battling for the title of ‘Top Gun‘ at the US Navy Fighter Weapons School in Miramar. But Top Gun 2 will surely see rivals Maverick (Cruise) and Iceman (Val Kilmer) reunite.
One guy who would not be back from the original is Michael Ironside as Lieutenant Commander Rick “Jester” Heatherly. With the star putting it down to the fact that his equation with producer Jerry Bruckheimer apparently is not the best at the moment.
As for Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, star Tom Skerritt is yet to announce whether the character will return in the sequel.
Though the character does not appear in the trailer. Some fans suspect the funeral scene depicted might be that of Viper. Say it ain’t so! After rumours circulating for the role of Goose’s son, Glen Powell did sign up for the movie in a mystery role named Hangman.
The sequel will also cast Jennifer Connelly as the movie’s female lead. She is playing a single mother who runs a local bar near the Navy base. She will be joining with Jon Hamm and Ed Harris. The latter as a so-far unnamed rear admiral and Maverick’s direct superior.
