Last month in an interview, legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese had disregarded Marvel movies. According to him, these movies should be compared with theme parks instead. Its not real cinema. This comment resulted in backlash. Marvel fans and filmmakers such as Joss Whedon and James Gunn reacted to this too in shock.
To explain his comment, he came out publicly with a lengthy opinion. He has said, “I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not the cinema. Honestly, the closet I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to other human beings”.
After this lengthy comment and explanation, fans and filmmakers lashed out in a frenzy. And he was attacked at his comments on the marvel movies and especially the directors of the film.
He’s made his comments while he was promoting his movie The Irishman, which stars Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino. The movie is a gem and a fantastic one, but it was accompanied by him backlashing Marvel movies too, which was not called for. A few weeks after the interview, he was shown support by the filmmaker of the Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola. He called the movies as “despicable.”
He commented,” Many franchise films are made by people of considerable talent and artistry. You can see it on the screen. The fact that the films themselves don’t interest me is a matter of personal taste and temperament .- and many more things which showed him not disrespecting the movie but sharing his preferences.
He further wrote about his favorite types of movies and the timeless cinema he grew up in. He also talked about market research and audience.
