In 2017, Wonder Woman released. It made over $821.8 million worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the year. The film was also considered a success in comparison to the previous DC disasters (such as Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman). This incredible success and the reaction from critics & fans led to plans of a sequel.
Wonder Woman: The Sequel
Patty Jenkins was set to return to the director’s chair. The preparations had begun to take this project titled “Wonder Woman: 1984” off the grounds.
20 December 2019 was initially decided as a release date. It was then scraped as Disney shifted Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker to the same period. Later, a 1 November date was decided. If it were to release then movies such as Terminator: Dark Fate & Charlie’s Angels would’ve possessed little competition.
WB then pushed the release date to 5 June 2020 where it may face some severe competition from “Fast & Furious 9”.
Movie-Clash in 2020
Marvel has also announced to release their “Black Widow” movie at the same time. Even though those movies do well on their own, WW2 has a relatively more significant time to dominate.
Another highly anticipated movie “Top Gun: Maverick” is set to release weeks after the said release date (Of WW2). This gives us it some time to do well in the box office.
As long as it does well according to fans’ expectations, it’s going to farewell.
It worked out in the end!
This move to delay the movie could’ve very well worked out for WB. Considering the immense success of “Joker” & it’s the path to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. Another high budget DC film releasing within months would’ve diminished its hype.
With the splendid marketing and visuals linking to “The Shining”, “Doctor Sleep” also looks to be an up-and-coming film.
Wonder Woman: 1984’s trailer releases in December of this year guess we’ll have to wait & see.
